The Battery Regulations result from a European Directive and were transposed into law on 5 May 2009. These regulations fall into the producer responsibility category. This means that certain businesses placing batteries on the market will be required to finance the collection, treatment and environmentally safe disposal when batteries reach the end of their life. Many more businesses will be required to register with one of the Environmental Agencies or take back used batteries in their shops. We are concerned with the 'portable batteries' used in normal domestic and business appliances, games and toys etc. Industrial and automotive batteries are a specialist segment of the market that we are not dealing with here. At present 97% of portable batteries are not recycled. The regulations have been brought in to increase this dramatically with recycling targets of 25% by 2012 and then 45% by 2016. This means that over 500 million batteries must be recycled within the next seven years. The BRS scheme is a service offered by The Wastepack Group, experts in recycling law compliance, and gives you access to a number of services to help meet the Battery Regulations.
