Introduction

Why Recycle?

The UK generates around 10 million tonnes of packaging waste a year. More than half of it can be found in household bins. However a large proportion is also generated by businesses. Most of this waste ends up buried in the ground as landfill even though a lot of it could be recycled.

The introduction of recycling targets for businesses to recover a proportion of the packaging they place on the market, means that at least 60% of packaging waste must now be recovered and recycled by 2008. It is important that we all recycle as much as possible so that the UK can meet these targets.

Why recycle? aims to inform both consumers and businesses about reducing, reusing, and recycling waste material and buying recycled products. It has been set up by Wastepack to discharge our members’ legal requirement to provide recycling information to their customers. Why recycle? contains recycling tips for householders and businesses and there are links to other organisations which you may find useful. There is also a section on the most common packaging recycling symbols to help you indentify the recyclable materials so that you can determine which recycling facility you need. Our recycle bank locator will help you find a recycling facility close to you.
